Formula Student is a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers. Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International (previously known as the Society of Automotive Engineers). The competition has its roots back in 1978. The idea behind it: A fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. Each student team designs, builds and tests a race car based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure the safety of the competitions and to promote clever problem solving. Each race car is judged in a number of different events which are divided in two parts, the dynamic and the static events, with 1000 being the maximum number of points. Chartist

In the Dynamic Events the cars race on track.

In the Static Events the team is judged based on ideas, management and design.

In the Engineering Design Event the technical aspects are judged, the construction and key attributes of the car. In Cost, the financial planning of the whole car, including manufacturing is analyzed. Lastly, the Business Plan is presented in order to convince a potential investor of a profitable business idea regarding the developed race car.

Endurance & Efficiency is arguably the most demanding race. Over 22 km distance, including one driver change, this score rates the consumed amount of energy in relation to the total time needed to complete the race. In Autocross the fastest lap time wins, this is the qualification for the Endurance. In Acceleration a 75 m distance is raced. Finally the lateral acceleration of the car is tested in Skidpad, an eight-shaped track race.

In addition to these events, various awards for superior design accomplishments are given. At the beginning of the competition, the vehicle is checked for compliance with the ruled during the Technical Inspection. Its braking ability and rollover stability are also checked before the vehicle is allowed to compete in the dynamic events.

Formula Student promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. The competition takes students out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work situations.
